Prairie Day event to be Sept 14th

The Dunn Ranch in Harrison County hosts the annual Prairie Day event which will be this weekend. Media Specialist with Missouri Department of Conservation, Bill Graham, says the Prairie Day celebration includes hiking tours of the Dunn Ranch and a tour wagon to observe the Nature Conservancy's bison herd.

"A special day is coming up for the Missouri Department of Conservation, the Nature Conservancy, our Volunteer Missouri Master Naturalists.  Because we're offering a special event - it's Prairie Day - which is going to be Saturday, September 14th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  It's going to be at Dunn Ranch Prairie in Harrison County, also at the Pawnee Prairie natural area."

Graham says the event helps people understand the importance of the area's natural prairies.

"This is going to be an event dedicated to the history, the ecology, but also the future of prairie in northwest Missouri.  The benefits of wildlife, the beauty of native plants for prairie.  But also we'll be looking at how native grasses and wild flowers are used in grazing systems."

The Dunn Ranch is located near Hatfield, Missouri in Harrison County. Prairie Day also highlights the conservation efforts underway in the Grand River Grasslands - a partnership between MDC, the Nature Conservancy, and Iowa Conservation agencies.
